Botox for TMJ Pain- What you need to know.
Botox ® has been approved by Health Canada for treatment of temporomandibular joint pain.
It is thought that this pain is a direct result of increased muscle tension in those muscles responsible for jaw joint activity. Botox ® works by decreasing muscle contractility or tension to provide immediate relief of pain, decreased clicking and improve overall function.
This treatment is covered by most private insurance companies. A referral from your family physician or general practitioner is required for consultation and treatment.
OUR APPROACH AT NEOMO SKIN:
During the treatment process, a series of small injections are administered to the muscles responsible for jaw joint movement; typically the masseter, temporalis muscles and the temporalis fascia that surrounds the TMJ joint. There is no anesthetic required although we do on occasion numb the area with cold packs to ensure your comfort. Any discomfort felt is typically minimal and brief. Some bruising or redness may occur but is temporary.
Results typically are felt 2-3 weeks following treatment though most patients require a series of 3 injections for maximal results. Treatment could improve headaches, jaw pain and allow greater jaw motion with opening the mouth and chewing food. Patients typically receive 3-4 months of results before the Botox ® effects begin to fade and repeated treatment be required.
Ask your health provider if Botox ® for TMJ pain may be right for you.
